Near Silverlake, L.A.'s original gay neighborhood (yes, even before West Hollywood), Flex offers an outdoor heated swimming pool and whirlpool, full gym equipment, tropical foliage on the deck, a maze and many rooms. Very popular on sunny weekend afternoons, especially Sundays, when there is a barbecue around 2 p.m. -- like you need more meat after a dip in the pool! Standard rooms are VERY small, but there are some large suites and fairly big video TV changing rooms, which have queen-size beds. There's an extra charge for them, but it's worth the price if you want any action in your room. Also, weekend nights are hit-or-miss in terms of crowd quality and timing. Sometimes crowded before bars close, sometimes afterward. The place is getting a little rundown, but is very clean and gets consistently good reviews from satisfied patrons. Membership $5 (day), $15 (half-year), lockers $12-$15, rooms $20-$35; 150 lockers, 30 rooms. Mon-Thurs 1 a.m.-7 a.m. lockers are only $8.
